APPLICATION PROCESS FOR REGISTERING AS A SOCIAL WORKER CANDIDATE OR A REGISTERED SOCIAL WORKER
APPLICATION TO REGISTER IN NOVA SCOTIA WITH INTERNATIONAL CREDENTIALS: Individuals with social work credentials from a school outside of Canada may be eligible for registration as a registered social worker or social worker candidate in Nova Scotia. Applicants’ credentials will be assessed and reviewed by the Board of Examiners. Based on the information provided in your application, the Board will determine your registration status. For more information, please contact the Board office. You may submit a complete application package to the Board for registration to practise social work in Nova Scotia.
APPLICANTS WHO ARE GRADUATES OF CANADIAN SOCIAL WORK DEGREE GRANTING PROGRAMS ACCEPTABLE TO THE BOARD OF EXAMINERS: You may submit a completed application package to the Board for registration to practice social work in Nova Scotia. Based on the information provided in your application, the Board will determine your registration status.
The Board of Examiners requires that you arrange to have following sent to the Board office:
If you are residing outside Nova Scotia, forms may be made available through the province’s child welfare agency or government department. If the province does not conduct a child abuse check, please note this in your application and assure that the police include a vulnerable persons’ check.

Your application will not be presented to the Board for approval until the Board office has received a complete application package. All material must be available 10 days prior to the Board meeting. The Board meets monthly, eleven times a year. Notification of the Board’s decision is mailed to you within a week after the decision. In addition, your name is added to the Register of Social Workers and Social Worker Candidates (click here) within the week.
Pending review of your application by the Board, the Registrar may grant temporary registration for a period of up to two months. For more information about temporary status, please contact the Board office.
Should your application not be approved, you will be informed, in writing of the reasons.
